The Servant Leader Workshop – Why it is the one MUST VISIT Leadership Encounter
Leadership has been described by Wikipedia as “a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”.
I’ve studied, admired, and gotten to know a lot of leaders in my life; and each of them are different from each other. Some are very intelligent guys, great public speakers, some has his or her own greatness in them; and I’ve witnessed leaders failed and succeeded, there are extreme rhetoric leaders, and there are leaders with sensible compromise, and there are those who never lose sight of solutions that sow the greatest successes.
They are all different.
So what makes a leader, a good leader? I just recently learned that it should be, A Servant Leader.
I’ve recently attended a Servant Leader Workshop organized by the Salt and Light Ventures, Inc and facilitated by Boris Joaquin. It’s truly a transformational encounter, to look up at Jesus as a role model for all leaders.
Whoever you are, whether you are a president of a certain nation, a pastor, a CEO, a parent, an officer of a certain organization, whether you like it or not you’re a leader; and in many ways, you influenced the way your followers think, their behavior or how they developed to what they are now. The way we lead affects greatly the life of those under our care. Their success and failures influenced greatly by their leaders.
From the workshop, I was enlighten that learning from the greatest leader ever live on earth Jesus Christ will assure the transformation for the better, starting from the leader down to them under his care.
Jesus led to demonstrate god’s love for His people by helping them change their heart, the way they think, show affection and lead. This workshop changed my life tremendously and it changed me to aspire to be a better leader – a servant leader.
Here is my ultimate top list of my light bulb moments in the Servant Leader workshop.
Lead like Jesus did. Possess these things like Jesus:

1. Have the HEART a “SERVING HEART” – people by nature have a self-serving heart. Some call it as “the big I”. I, myself, me. Not willing to sacrifice but always to satisfy self. But a SERVING HEART is willing to set aside his ego, pride and self interest for the well being of those people below him, willing to submit and follow up to the smallest detail like what Jesus did in Matthew 3:13-17 & 4:1-11 KJV
Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
Here, Jesus shows total surrender by submitting Himself to do the right thing that He would require of His followers. He set up an example.

2. Have the HEAD: “the MIND of CHRIST” – the servant leadership point of view modeled and taught by Jesus, and then we must learn what changes in thinking are required to align our own thinking about leadership with His.
Leadership Vision – Servant leadership begins with a clear and compelling vision of the future that excites passion in the leader and commitment on those who follow.
A good vision has three parts:
- Your Purpose/Mission – Improve the quality of life of your customer.
- Your Preferred picture of the future – Your accomplishments if you succeed.
- Your Values – Your standing and principles.

3. Have the HANDS – APPLICATION/ LEADERSHIP BEHAVIOR – The decision-by-decision behavior of leaders can make or break their long range effectiveness and their ability to inspire trust from the followers.
When Jesus called His disciples to follow Him and He will make them “fishers of men” and when He commanded them to “go and make disciples of all nations”, He promised them that He will always be with them even to the end of the age.
This is the duty of a servant leader-to invest his life to the life of those who follow.

4. Have the HABITS – daily recalibration of commitment to a vision.
An effective servant leader recalibrate their commitment to their vision-purpose, picture of the future, and values-through the use of five disciplines that were an integral part of what Jesus practiced during His earthly walk :
- Solitude – spending time alone with God
- Prayer – speaking with God
- Study of Scripture – Preparing for the challenges that were yet to come.
- Faith in God’s Unconditional Love- proceeding with confidence grounded in trust.
- Involvement in Accountability- relationships-sharing his vulnerability.

5. Have the FILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT- it was commanded by God that every believer must be filled with the Holy Spirit. A Spirit guided life. You’re not called to lead by yourself, you’re not only guided but indwelled by the Spirit of God, who will empower you and will enable you to be a fruitful SERVANT LEADER.
With the very example of leadership (servant leadership) that was exemplified by Christ, success is ensured and our Lord God is well pleased.
Final thoughts…
Leadership is an influence process. It is working with people to accomplish their goals and the goals of the organization. – Ken Blanchard.
Leadership is indeed a process of working with people to accomplish not just the goals of the organization but together with the goals of the followers, yes, THEIR GOALS.
Whenever we have an opportunity or responsibility to influence the thinking and the behavior of others, the first choice we are called to make is to see the moment through the eyes of self-interest or for the benefit of those we are leading. You have to choose, Be a Self Serving Leader or A Servant Leader.
Always remember, The highest calling of every leader is to serve and not to be served.
Questions for you all the “Leaders” out there…
- Have you bothered to prepare yourself for leadership?
- What do you believe?
- Will your followers reach their potential working with you?
- Can your followers achieve their own goals by working with you?
- What may your followers expect from you?
- Can your followers trust their future to you?
Are YOU leading like Jesus? YOU should, Be a Servant Leader.
